We are travelling east, towards one of the smallest and toughest deserts in the world – the Judean Desert. We will pass the Good Samaritan Inn and descend lower than sea level, to the ancient city of Jericho, a green spot in the khaki colors of the soft-hilled scenery.
In Jericho, we’ll see the sycamore tree on which Zacchaeus climbed when he tried to get a better look at Jesus, and we’ll recall the Biblical tale of Joshua marching his troops around Jericho’s city walls until they fell. We’ll stop at Elisha Spring with its sweet water, and see the Mount of Temptation towering above the city. We will then continue south, to the city of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born about 2,000 years ago.
In Bethlehem, we’ll stop at Manger Square and enter the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Church of the Nativity – which holds the Holy Grotto where the nativity took place. We’ll visit the adjacent Church of St. Catherine and its subterranean caves holding ancient tombs and a shrine. From there, we’ll passes Shepherds’ Field and return west to Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv.
